As part of the 10th Regional Meeting of Children for Conservation of the Gulf of California, 100 children from the sixth grade in coastal communities in Baja California, Sonora, Nayarit and Sinaloa freed 500 seahorses back to the sea at the La Marina dock.

The release was sponsored by the Mazatlán aquarium in coordination with the municipal family services office and volunteers.

Director of the aquarium, biologist Jorge del Rincón Jarero, commented that the release took place at the Marina because it is a protected reserve that will provide the species with better chances of survival.

They annually release approximately 2,000 seahorses, he said, adding that unfortunately the species appears to be one that is in danger of extinction.
