On Saturday and Sunday, the federal roads department and Durango Civil
Protection were issuing warnings to drivers to use extreme caution on the
Mazatlán-Durango autopista and free highway due to a heavy snowfall.
As more snow fell on the region at kilometer 96 and 199 at Coscomate on the autopista and kilometer 145 on the free highway near Durango city, at 9:23 am yesterday police closed both highways but reopened them 76 minutes later asking drivers to be aware of dangerous driving conditions.
At the Mazatlán bus terminal, dozens of tourists heading home after the long weekend waited two hours for the highways to reopen and buses to depart.
