In a campaign entitled “Ojos para Mazatlán” (Eyes for Mazatlán), the local Lions Club is donating over 6,000 pairs of eyeglasses to those without financial resources to purchase glasses themselves.

Gilberto Jiménez Morales, President of the service organization, said this is the 17th consecutive year of the program and is a result of collaboration with diverse Lions Clubs in the United States who bring new and used eyeglasses to Mazatlán from the States.

During the three days of the campaign, the association Luz en tus Ojos provides six ophthalmologists from Minnesota to do the exams and fit the requisite eyeglasses to the patient.

Occasionally during the exams, said Jiménez Morales, they detect someone who requires cataract surgery whom they refer to DIF (family services). Last year 44 people underwent cataract surgery in a local hospital after being referred.
