While the Mazatlán municipal government “cut” the number of permits for alcohol service from stands in Carnaval party areas, the Sinaloa government authorized an extension for closing hours and alcohol service in restaurants in Olas Altas and the Plazuela Machado.

Official Mayor Salvador Reynosa told media yesterday those restaurants can remain open and serving alcohol until 3am, instead of the regulatory 1am, during the days of Carnaval only.

He also advised the municipality has reduced the number of alcohol stands this year from 40 in 2014 to 30 this year. During the first Carnaval parade on Sunday, February 15, 26 beer stands have been approved and for the second parade on Tuesday, February 17, 12 have been approved.

Four hundred permits have been issued by the municipality for vendors, with 60 permits alone for vendors at the baseball stadium during the coronation of the Queen of Carnaval which also falls on the Día del Amor y la Amistad – Valentine´s Day. Most of those permits, said Reynosa, are for sales of food, peanuts, tacos and Carnaval memorabilia.

Media also reported that the Muestra Gastronónica del Carnaval will be inaugurated tomorrow at 2pm in the Plazuela Machado. Participating restaurants will offer Sinaloan gastronomical delights beginning at 1pm, with musicians playing in the Plazuela until 7pm followed by DJ music until 2:30am.

Those entering the Plazuela will not only go through security checks but will be given a bracelet that will allow them to enter and exit the area.

And last night, Mazatlán Mayor Carlos Felton along with the Sinaloa Secretary of Tourism and other public figures inaugurated the Carnaval lighting along the Malecón. In time for the large crowds expected on the boardwalk, the municipality has recently installed 306 garbage pails and benches.
