Under a cloudy sky early in the morning yesterday, personnel from Mazatlán’s municipal hall arrived in Colonia Libertad to hand out blankets to hundreds of waiting residents.

The blankets are part of a programme initiated by the municipality to assist residents of poorer colonias during the winter months.

The programme encompasses a total of ten colonias where Mayor Carlos Felton and his wife Sylvia Felton, president of DIF, have given away two blankets each to 1,200 families. In some cases, media reported, residents were seen carrying half a dozen as they left the distribution area.

In Colonia Libertad, two lines formed of residents holding vouchers in their hands and although some arrived at the local basketball court distribution center without vouchers, they also walked away with blankets as a gift from the municipality.

Mayor Felton told reporters that Mazatlecans often think it is not cold here in the winter, but the people of these colonias live in cardboard houses.
