Francisco Lizárraga Sánchez, president of the Cámara Nacional de la Industria de Restaurantes y Alimentos Condimentados (Canirac) in Mazatlán said yesterday his association expects at least 50 new restaurants to open in Mazatlán this year.

The restaurants will provide 200 direct jobs and 400 indirect.

However, he told reporters, most of the new eating establishments will be offering seafood and he called on new restauranteurs to provide more variety for the growing tourist and local trade in Mazatlán. He suggested, for example, restaurants for Brazilian and Thai food.

Expectations for the 2015 restaurant industry are much better this year, said Lizárraga Sánchez. The constant flow of tourists into the city has put a halt to the annual layoffs of waiters and staff during the summer months of August through October when in previous years tourism was at its lowest ebb.
