30 Percent Increase in Water Tax Not Enough, says Mayor

General Manager of Mazatlán’s water department (Jumapam), Rigoberto Félix Díaz, said last week Jumapam officially presented a solicitation to the Sinaloa Congress to allow the water department to increase water taxes by thirty percent.

A study on water tariffs to determine the amount of increase necessary to do repairs in the municipality was carried out by technicians who proposed the 30 percent increase, which amount was ratified by a citizens’ council comprised of business associations and the social sector.

However, said Mazatlán Mayor Carlos Felton, thirty percent is not enough. In years past, water departments throughout the country have been against raising water taxes for fear citizens would rebel against the politicians, which is wrong. Citizens, he stated, complain more about the inefficiency, the lack of services and growth in the city than increased tariffs.

If Congress approves the increase, the money obtained would be destined for water and drainage projects in the municipality for which there is already an executive plan on the table.
