A surprise drug test yesterday revealed the state of some Mazatlán public transport drivers. Of 153 drivers tested, six were positive for marijuana, cocaine and methamphetamines. One driver was found to have two drugs in his system. All six drivers were scheduled to work yesterday.
While drug testing has been ongoing if sporadic, this time the State decided not to announce the day of testing to avoid drivers evading the process. The exam consisted of analyzing urine at two revision stations set up on the international highway heading north and Ave. Miguel Alemán in Playa Sur.
Sinaloa Roads and Transport director, Domingo Ramírez Armenta, said the strategy this time was to solicit documents from public transport drivers the day before explaining the transport department was checking the validity of documents.
This time, he said, drivers were not expecting a drug test when they arrived at the revision stations and could not leave to drive their routes whereas previously, he commented, when testers arrived the drivers left.
The director advised the State is continuing its program whereby drivers who tested positive for drug use are offered a rehab program but if they test positive a second time, they are fired.
The anti-drug operation for public transport drivers began on January 2 in Los Mochis where five out of 97 tests were positive for drugs. Two days later, testers were in Culiacán where three of 89 drivers tested positive.
Media reported that what annoyed the bus drivers was the fact they not only had to wait a few hours for test results but they also had to pay 150 pesos for the procedure.
