100,000 Tourists Expected to Attend Carnaval

Sinaloa Secretary of Tourism, Francisco Córdova Celaya, said he expects 100,000 visitors to converge on the city for Mazatlán’s annual Carnaval to be held this year February 12 through 17.
He calculated that the 12,000 hotel rooms in the city will be reserved with four persons per room for a total of 50,000 tourists in hotels alone. Approximately 95 percent of tourists, he said, will be nationals from neighbouring States and north of Sinaloa.
In order to avoid traffic congestion, the four lanes of Av. Camarón Sábalo in the Golden Zone will become one way only, south to north, from Valentino´s up to the La Marina intersection. The change in traffic flow was successfully initiated as a pilot project during Semana Santa last year.
Speaking to reporters yesterday about Carnaval, Mayor Carlos Felton advised that the entrance to Plazuela Machado in the Centro Historico will be cordoned off and regulated in order to avoid overcrowding. When asked if this might cause a problem for those who will not be allowed to enter the Plazuela, the Mayor responded the situation is the same as when all seats in a restaurant are occupied and no one else is allowed in.
