Kenyans Rule the Podium at Pacífico Marathon – Again

For the third year in a row, Kenyan runners ruled the winner´s podium in the 42 kilometer marathon held yesterday in Mazatlán.
Over 12,000 athletes competed in the various categories over the two days of competition in balmy weather and sunshine cheered on by their families and friends from the roadside.
Stephen Njoroge easily took first in the 42 kilometer run with a time of 2:18:38, followed by Gualberto Vargas of Guanajuato with a time of 2:18:52. Kenyan Martin Matindi was third running the course in 2:21:52.

Two Kenyan female runners captured first and second places in the 42 kilometer run, Carolina Jebiwot with a time of 2:42:01 and Dorcas Jeruto at 2:44:15. Angela Brito of Ecuador took third place on the podium with a time of 2:45:26.
Mexican female runners fared much better in the half-marathon with sisters Dulce Torres and Liliana Torres taking first and second spot respectively. Kenyan Penninah Mosoti was in third place.
In the men’s half-marathon, first and third were won by Kenyan runners with second place being taken by Mexican Fernando Cervantes.
On Saturday evening, the Festival de la Luz fireworks display along the Malecón attracted an estimated 50,000 onlookers.
Police reported an incident free marathon weekend, with the exception of traffic bottlenecks as drivers looked for alternate routes when the main thoroughfares were closed for the race and fireworks display.
