Municipality to Begin “Anti-Littering” Campaign

Five months after initiating its “Por un Mazatlán Seguro” campaign to enforce motorcycle helmet and safety regulations, the municipality will now tackle littering problems that plague the beaches, streams and streets of the port.
Hotel owners at a Clean Beaches Committee meeting yesterday castigated Mayor Carlos Felton for not attending to tourist areas that were in need of clean-up.
In reply, the Mayor announced an anti-littering campaign, stating it would begin with a social awareness program advising citizens it is against the law to throw garbage in the streets and damages the environment. However, he added, the habit of littering cannot be changed overnight.
He is sure, he went on to say, that people do not throw garbage with bad intentions. They do it because that is what they see others do, including parents. A change must occur. The municipality will give citizens a time to change and then fines will be applied.
According to municipal environmental protections laws, the fine for littering in public places is 20 to 20,000 minimum salaries.
