6.5 Million Pesos Required to Repair Cathedral Organ

The 19th Century organ of the iconic Catedral Basílica de la Immaculada Concepción in downtown Mazatlán has not sounded a note since 1990.
The French designed and built organ was first heard in the cathedral on May 17, 1899 but time and atmospheric factors damaged it beyond use. Approximately 6.5 million pesos will be required to restore the organ.
Federal deputy Francisca Elena Corrales Corrales, responsible for obtaining funding, said they will look for federal funds from INAH and Conculta.
They began approximately eight years ago to repair the instrument in four stages and are still in the first stage of cleaning, she said. The following three stages will involve repairs, reinstallation and tuning. The German restorer is in Barcelona and the quote to repair the organ is 400,000 euros, she added.
