Hurricane Marie is the first category 5 storm of the 2014 Pacific southeastern hurricane season.
The Port Captain closed Mazatlán’s port at 6am this morning to vessels under 500 tons in the wake of high waves generated by the passing of Hurricane Marie, a category 5 hurricane that was downgraded last night to category 4.
According to the Hurricane Center in Miami, Marie is located approximately 465 miles southwest of the southern tip of Baja California and is moving west-northwest at 12 miles per hour with sustained winds of up to 145 mph.
High swells are affecting Mexico’s Pacific coast shoreline as hurricane force winds from Marie extend up to 60 miles from the storm’s center and tropical storm winds reach out to 310 miles.
Commander of Mazatlán’s lifeguard squad, Adrián Sergio Cervantes, said yesterday his squad has already rescued eight swimmers this past weekend caught in the high swells and resulting currents which began on Friday as Marie moved up and away from the Pacific coastline.
