DIF Begins Campaign to Respect Disabled Parking Spaces

Mazatlán’s family services (DIF) began a campaign this week entitled “Respeta su Espacio” to ask drivers to respect designated disabled parking spaces and ramps.
Students from the Tec Institute and Politécnica University stood at busy intersections where they talked to drivers about the campaign and handed out brochures.
The campaign asks drivers transporting those in wheelchairs to apply for a free handicapped decal at the DIF office at municipal hall. In addition, drivers need to carry a card with a photograph of the disabled person to show police if questioned when parking in a designated handicap spot.
DIF President Slyvia Treviño de Felton pointed out the free decals must be renewed annually and will not be handed out to those transporting people with downs syndrome or other similar incapacities, but only to people with permanent disabilities who must use a wheelchair, walker or crutches.
