Casa Nika Trains Dogs for Diabetics

The Casa Nika Foundation, supported primarily by donations from foreign residents and money earned from its second hand store on Luis Zúñiga in El Centro, has opened its door to a project to train dogs to detect high and low sugar levels in diabetics.
Hugo Cruz, trainer of the first generation of the service dogs, said they try to use rescue dogs found in local shelters for training which lasts between six and eight months.
The cost for service dog and companion is no more than 10,000 pesos, most of the which the foundation absorbs, he said.
The dogs are taught to recognize sugar levels in diabetics and warn their owner by sitting down and presenting its paw when it is too low, or bowing with two paws on the ground when it is too high.
