Peña Nieto unveils tourism investment

THE NEWS
President Enrique Peña Nieto announced Wednesday an investment of 180 billion pesos ($13.8 billion) to expand and modernize infrastructure in the nation’s tourist markets.
During the groundbreaking ceremony for the tourism promotion campaign, “Live it to Believe it”, the president said that in the first quarter of this year Mexico received 9.5 million visitors.
The federal government has indicated two strategies to reposition the country as a leader in tourism. One is the launch of “Live it to believe it” campaign. The other is a package of 44 competitive initiatives to modernize and revitalize tourist destinations.
The president said that Mexico has everything needed to become a global tourist power — beautiful beaches, cultural traditions, cuisine, music and festivals — and that it is also an important destination for business.
Peña Nieto said that in 2013 Mexico received 23.7 million international tourists, which placed it as the second most-visited country in Latin America behind Brazil, according to the World Tourism Organization.
Foreign earnings from international visitors in the first quarter were $5.76 billion, a 15 percent rise on the same period last year. The president added that border tourism increased by over 30 percent compared to the same period 2013-2014.
“Although this data is very encouraging, we know we have to pick up the pace to take advantage of our enormous potential, we must change paradigms and act with vision in each unique destination,” he said.
Peña Nieto said government intervention would create strategic and sustainable tourism markets in Mexico. He said strategies would ensure “diversified and high quality services through innovation as well as a strong impetus to the tourism infrastructure.”
