The campaign is divided into three phases beginning today through June 30.
Speaking at a meeting of the Board of Public Safety, its Executive Secretary, Renato Ocampo Alcántar, and Mazatlán mayor, Carlos Felton González, said that the city would begin a road safety program “We are Building the Future for a Safe Mazatlán.”
Renato Ocampo said, “We want to have an orderly city, the foundation upon which it to build for safety in Mazatlán. It is an effort requiring the efforts of all sectors of society in order to safeguard the lives of our citizens.”
He said the road safety campaign would begin on Wednesday, June 4, through notices in newspapers and on radio and television, and through the distribution of flyers throughout the city, as well as in schools and businesses. The notices will explain the program, laws that will be enforced and the timetable for their enforcement.
The second phase begins June 15 and people who are not using seatbelts, riding a motorcycle without a helmet, talking on a cell phone while driving, driving while under the influence of alcohol, and situations in which more than two people are riding on a motorcycle will be ticketed.
The third phase will take place between June 15 and June 30 and tickets will be issued to people who double park, park next to a yellow painted curb, and who park in parking spaces designated for disabled drivers and pregnant women.
The mayor added that everyone will have a period of 15 days in which to get outdated or missing license plates replaced with currently issued ones. He also said the city does not want dead citizens. He noted that already this year vehicle accidents have cost the lives of 11 children and that is what drives this campaign.
