Citizens’ Undercover Surveillance of City Buses

Yesterday city Councilman Roberto Osuna Valdez presented an undercover survey taken by a group of young people who rode 78 different city buses throughout the month of May. The Councilman said, “There is no need to hire a private company (to undertake a study of the city’s bus drivers), citizens who are part of my team did it.”
Although those involved in the survey purchased tickets and rode the buses as ordinary passengers, they were taking notes on what was going on during the trip. Roberto Osuna showed the used bus tickets, as evidence that the surveys actually occurred.
The survey took place on 78 different buses and on all bus routes over the month of May. The survey showed that 37 percent of the bus drivers ran at least one red light on any given route and 44 percent changed lanes in violation of traffic laws.
The survey also revealed that 81 percent of the bus drivers took at least one cellular telephone call while driving his route. But, the most disturbing fact, according to the Councilman, was that 96 percent of the bus drivers exceeded the posted speed limit.
Roberto Osuna said the number of days per week that bus drivers’ work and a change in culture of the business is necessary for the safety of the citizens of Mazatlán.
