This is a message from former U.S. Ambassador to Mexico, lawyer, public servant, and cross-border specialist Antonio Garza, regarding tourist destinations and the recent energy and market reforms in our country, it was published on his Web Newsletter on June 11th, 2014:
You’re no doubt familiar with the energy and market updates on Mexico that I provide from time to time in my newsletters. I thought I might change it up a bit, as you start to think about your summer travel.
Beyond the significant opportunities for investment in Mexico, after living and working here for more than a decade, I’ve been fortunate to experience so many of the country’s famous and lesser-known (but no less fantastic) locales for tourism, too.
Mexico never ceases to surprise and amaze me. From the beaches and archeological wonders of the Riviera Maya to the spectacular vistas of the Copper Canyon, and not to mention the historical and cosmopolitan offerings of Mexico City, I hope you’ll find time this summer or fall to take in some of the warmth, culture and history that makes Mexico every bit a second home for me.
When making your plans, I’d encourage you to explore the Mexico Tourism Board’sVisit Mexico for an interactive, travel-planning online guide.
And, yes, beyond all that Mexico has to offer as a tourist destination, there’s still plenty of interest in the country’s burgeoning economic prospects as well.
Recently, I joined Peter Cook for his Petroleum Connection event in Houston, the Mexican Oil and Gas Symposium. Peter convened a great line up, and it was an honor for me to join experts from the public and private sectors from the U.S. and Mexico, many of them longtime friends and colleagues, several who have been an integral part of bringing reform to Mexico’s energy sector.
Here at White & Case in Mexico City, we’re staying abreast of all aspects of energy reform and how it will impact companies and investors.
So, in case you missed them, I thought you might find a couple of recent reports on the energy sector and broader reform efforts in Mexico of interest. Specifically, Spotlight on Reforms in Mexico highlights the many reasons and ways the country continues to hold a prominent position on investors’ radar screens and our more recent piece Unlocking Demand for Natural Gas Pipelines provides some great insights as to what’s going on in the U.S.
And lastly, on the eve of the World Cup, when tomorrow over 3 billion fans will be watching that first soccer match in Sao Paulo, the Adrienne Arsht Latin America Center of the Atlantic Council has issued a new policy brief titled Will Brazil Get What It Expects from the World Cup? It’s a fascinating and worthwhile read on the impact of “mega-events” on a host country.
