Costa de Oro Founder Dies at Age 104

Don Ramón Castro Somera, founder of the Costa de Oro hotel 40 years ago, died yesterday in Mazatlán just before his 105th birthday.
Originally from San Juan de los Frayles in San Ignacio, he began his career as a boy selling clothes to miners at the El Tambor mine in San Ignacio who paid the young entrepreneur in small gold nuggets.
After obtaining a small bank loan, Don Ramón opened several successful stores in the city and in the 1970s purchased the ocean front property where he built the 230 room Costa de Oro hotel in Mazatlán’s Golden Zone.
