Bus Company Forced to Increase Fares

The company expects to raise the regular fare to between 7.5 pesos and 8 pesos.
The company expects to raise the regular fare to between 7.5 pesos and 8 pesos.
Given the increase in price for diesel fuel, bus fares will have to increase, said the President of Águilas del Pacifico bus company Juan Zataráin Velarde.
Increases are imminent, he said, and while the present regular fare is 6.50 pesos and 3 pesos for students, the company expects to raise the regular fare to between 7.5 pesos and 8 pesos.
Zataráin Velarde pointed out that on Saturday this week the price of diesel will increase to 13 pesos 6 centavos a liter from 12.95, making it more expensive than in the United States.
Truthfully, he told reporters, the company does not want to increase fares but unfortunately they have no choice. Urban bus companies do not receive government subsidies and pay the same amount for fuel as any other vehicle owner.
They have repeated requested a subsidy from the three levels of government, to no avail. On the contrary, he said, for the past 18 years the bus companies have offered their own subsidy to students in the form of a 50 percent discount on fares.
The bus company president did not disclose when fares would increase nor the exact amount of the increase.
