Mexico’s Interjet carrier had two reasons to celebrate Wednesday.

One was the kickoff of its new route from Mexico City to Palenque, Chiapas, with flights beginning Thursday.

The other was authorization from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration to begin flying its Superjet 100 to the United States.

The Palenque flights, which will be made by the 93-seat Superjet 100 aircraft, represents a major step in Interjet’s plan to interconnect the southeast region of the nation, including Villahermosa, Oaxaca, Mérida, Tuxtla Gutiérrez and Cancún.

“We’ll be doing studies to make sure that this will work,” said Interjet CEO José Luis Garza Álvarez of the southeast linking plan. “We’ll be making the scheduling appropriate so that tourists from Russia, Italy and France can extend there stay in Chiapas and the surrounding area.”

The European-built Superjet 100 that will make the flight conforms to the Western air safety standards set by a number of certifying agencies, including the European Air Safety Agency (EASA) and Mexico’s Directorate General of Civil Aeronautics (DGAC).

It has been in service domestically in Mexico since last September, flying out of Mexico City International Airport to Aguascalientes, Minatitlán, Campeche, Torreón, Zacatecas, Mazatlán and Palenque.

Notimex reported the FAA approval after an interview with Garza Álvarez before the event commemorating the Palenque flights.

“Getting this permission is something that may seem difficult to achieve at first glance, but given this airline’s safety level and efficiency we were eventually able to get the needed permission to operate to and from the United States and Mexico,” said Garza Álvarez.

Garza Álvarez indicated that the U.S. flights could be available this year.
