Victor Arriaga Hugo Haro, Director General of the National Commission of Aquaculture and Fishing (CONAPESCA), announced that fishing for shrimp would end on March 10 at 08:00 pm in that area of the Pacific coast of México from Sonora to Nayarit and beginning on March 13th the shrimp season would end in the area from Jalisco to Oaxaca.

He said that adult white and blue shrimp have been depleted in the northern Mexican Pacific and that their offspring need to be protected so that they can reach maturity. He added that there are still plenty of shrimp varieties to the south and fishing in that area would be able to continue a few extra days.

The National Chamber of Fishing and Aquaculture Industries (CANAINPESCA) and the Ship Owners Union agreed with the closure dates.

Ricardo Michel Luna, President of the Association of Ship Owners of the Pacific, said that the shrimp catch for the 2013-2014 season will be comparable to the catch of the prior season, however, demand for shrimp has increased the market value of the catch.

He added that about 60 percent of the shrimp fleet is at sea.
