Ship building has returned to Mazatlán with the announcement that the ship builder Maritima de Ecologia S.A. de C.V., (Marecsa) has been awarded a contract to build two ships for Petróleos Mexicano (Pemex).

Under the contract Marecsa will build two Fast Supply Vessels (FSV) for Pemex. A FSV is a multipurpose vessel with shallow draught and excellent sea-going qualities. Its design with large areas on open deck makes it possible to transport containers plus other equipment. The bow visor together with the ramp makes loading and unloading easy. It travels at speeds up to 30 knots/hr.

The contract will benefit Mazatlán with 300 direct jobs and a minimum of 400 indirect opportunities for employment.

In 2012 Marecsa signed an agreement and took over the old abandoned Sidek shipyard. The shipyard encompasses 2.5 hectares (6.1 acres) and is the second largest shipyard in México. The largest shipyard is in Veracruz.

José Guadalupe Delgado Zaldivar, in charge of the Mazatlán shipyard said, “This contract is of great importance, because it finally restarts the shipbuilding industry in México after a movement that has been developing in recent years.”
