Humberto Becerra Batista, Vice President of the National Chamber of the Fishing and Aquaculture Industries (CANAINPESCA), said the tuna season will begin shortly.  The tuna fleet will be fishing for yellowfin tuna, bigeye tuna, and bluefin tuna.

Becerra said the tuna fleet is about ready to sail and the industry is expecting a good season. He noted that last season closed with a good catch, which portends well for this season.

He added that the U.S. ban on purse seine vessels flying the Mexican flag, which was imposed last November, will expire on January 18th.

The Vice President said that Mazatlán is the largest port in México for off-loading tuna. There are 30 vessels in the tuna fleet affiliated with CANAINPESCA.
