Ricardo Michel Luna, president of the Union of
Ship Owners, said that between 70% and 80% of the shrimp fleet is still
at sea. He said that although the catch is down 50% from earlier trips,
the price of shrimp has permitted many shrimp boats to continue fishing.
Ricardo Michel said, “I’m glad that people are
doing their best, although the catch levels and production is down, the
adjustment in the price of shrimp has allowed some to continue to
generate employment.”
He added, however, that there are more than a hundred shrimp boats docked and they have no plans to make an additional trip.
