Sergio Cervantes, Commander of Mazatlán’s Lifeguards, said that jelly fish have been appearing in the waters and beaches of Mazatlán and swimmers should take precautions
.
He said the appearance of jelly fish this early in the year is quite abnormal, noting they have never been seen in January. Sergio Cervantes said the jelly fish normally appear in May or the beginning of the rainy season when the temperature begins to change. He added that since this winter has been unusually warm, that may have caused them to appear sooner.

The Commander said that the jelly fish are normally carried with the flow of the ocean, so people should be careful when walking on the edge of the beach or in the shallow waters.

Reports of stings from jelly fish are already being recorded, he noted.

In addition to the jelly fish Sergio Cervantes said sting rays are also present in the early morning hours and at dusk when the temperature begins to drop.
